Canadian manufacturer Magna recently revealed a brand new secret weapon.
Magna, a leading Canadian automotive supplier, has unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV) motor at CES 2024, setting new benchmarks in the industry. This next-generation eDrive motor is designed for efficiency, boasting a 93% efficiency rating, a significant improvement over its previous models. It's notably lighter at just 165 lbs and 20% lower in height, enhancing its integration into various vehicle platforms.
The motor's power-to-weight ratio and torque density are top-tier, with outputs of up to 250 kW and an axle torque of 5,000 Nm, making it suitable for a range of vehicle segments from C to E. A remarkable feature is its ability to rotate around its drive axis, offering unprecedented flexibility for vehicle manufacturers in system design.
Magna has also addressed sustainability concerns by reducing the use of rare-earth metals, though not eliminating them completely, moving towards a goal of magnet-free induction motors in the future. This motor is not only about performance; it's also about creating scalable solutions for OEMs transitioning to electric platforms.
In summary, Magna's new EV motor stands out for its efficiency, reduced size and weight, and environmental considerations, positioning it as a potential game-changer in the electrification of vehicles across various segments. It's a testament to Magna's commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle space.
