They are eco-friendly, efficient, and fun to drive. But did you know that most electric car motors use rare-earth magnets that are expensive and harmful to the environment? These magnets are made from materials like neodymium, samarium, and dysprosium, which are mined in countries like China, where labor and environmental standards are low. The extraction and processing of these materials can cause pollution, health problems, and human rights violations. But what if there was a way to make electric car motors without using rare-earth magnets? What if there was a way to make them cheaper, greener, and more powerful? Well, there is. And it was invented by a 17-year-old high school student from Florida. His name is Robert Sansone, and he is the winner of the 2022 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the largest and most prestigious science competition for high school students in the world.
